Although most people think that practical things are there to serve a purpose and that the aesthetic component has nothing to look for in practicality, I will give you some tips on how to make functional objects also aesthetically appealing and where to find them. Let’s start!
1. Be honest in the planning phase
Before you go shopping, you need to make a plan to avoid impulsive decisions and potentially end up in a situation where you store items at home that, hand on heart, you don’t even know when was the last time when you have actually used it. We all remember those visits to the pantry where we would see on the shelves more or less neatly stacked up all kinds of household appliances, from multipractices, mixers, blenders, juicers, which our mothers have collected over the years, and which you do not even remember when and if, they have ever been in function at all.

2. Do you have enough space in your home for another product?
Most of our homes are full of things, both necessary and unnecessary. Before you embark on a quest, ask yourself do you have some free place in your home for one more thing? Even if you’re now aware that your closets and shelves are bursting with clutter, that’s no reason not to buy that necessary thing (the emphasis is on the necessary one!). In order to create a place for a new thing we would recommend you to first organise and to declutter the room or closet in which the new necessary item should enter. You can always follow that “one in, one out” system in order to avoid unnecessary chaos.
3. Think outside of the box
Although this advice is not applicable to all things in the home (such as household appliances), it is super practical in the process of organising, selecting or decorating your home. So for example you can store clothes (especially smaller items of clothing such as underpants or socks) or household utensils (such as strainers, straws, etc.) in baskets or boxes, which in this way have a functional and aesthetic component. This trick will be very practical in bathrooms that have non to little closed storage space, so with the help of baskets we can very easily organise things like towels, toilet paper, makeup, etc. Let your imagination run wild.
4. Product longevity
When shopping, we must not forget about Mother Nature and how our shopping habits are affecting the environment in the long run. Therefore, at this stage we will pay attention to out what materials the product is made of. Are they of good quality, will they serve us for many years and can these materials be easily recycled after the product stops working?
5. Google is your best friend
Once you have honestly answered all the previous questions and concluded that you really need this new kettle, salt shaker or something else, you can start searching and Google will be of great help to you. Most likely, the search will not end successfully with the first click of the mouse because the offer on the market is too large, but you know how they say, “All things come to those who wait”, or in our case, to those who google. If in the first phase you have come to the conclusion that you have a certain amount of money at your disposal and the desired product exceeds the defined budget, you always have the option of Ebay, Vintage stores, Second hand shops, Etsy or local sellers who often have good discounts. What is always a good option for the budget is to subscribe to the newsletters on the web sites where you have already found the desired product. Brands very often have discounts for their subscribers, so you can save quite a lot of money, especially if it’s Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
And to conclude in the end, practicality can be beautiful. And remember, if you find a product that is at the same time functional and beautiful then you don’t really need decoration in the apartment after all.
